Abstract
A study was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of the Penman and Thornthwaite methods of estimating potential evapo-transpiration. The criteria used to determine potential evapo-transpiration was that of weighed lysimeters. In addition to the lysimeters, Energy Balance equipment was developed, as this is widely regarded as one of the most accurate methods of measuring evapo-transpiration. The lysimeters were operated over the summer months at Lincoln and sufficient data was collected on the lysimeter site to allow both the Penman and Thornthwaite methods to be accurately calculated. Statistical examinations of the results showed that on a daily and monthly basis, over the summer months at least, the Penman method of estimating potential evapo-transpiration was vastly superior to the Thornthwaite method. Potential evapo-transpiration and water requirement duration curves, were produced by both the Penman and Thornthwaite methods, and are presented in the Appendices.
