Use options for the lower Ashley riverbed
Abstract
This study examines use options for the lower Ashley riverbed which are consistent with its flood discharge function.
The project has four main aims: (i) to identify institutional arrangements and natural characteristics which prescribe present and potential uses; (ii) to propose an alternative design channel to improve riverbed stability; (iii) to present a range of use options for the riverbed; and, (iv) to evaluate tangible costs and benefits of each option.
Areas and conditions for the use options are derived by assuming the alternative channel design is adopted.
Six options for use of the riverbed are investigated: (i) continuation of the status quo; (ii) increased grazing; (iii) harvest of the present stand of merchantable timber; (iv) production of smallwood; (v) production of peelers; and (vi) establishment of indigenous forest. It is shown that the riverbed has a production potential much greater than its present productivity.
In conclusion a multiple use management policy is proposed. This recommends a combination of recreation areas, production forestry, and grazing.... [Show full abstract]
