Investigation into setting up an art gallery in a private home

    Purdue, J. M.
    Abstract
This report is on setting up an art gallery in a private home. The house is a 6000 sq. foot house which is situated on the corner of Springfield Road and Eversleigh Street, Christchurch, which is just outside the Bealey Avenue inner city limits. The house will be open on the first Sunday of each month from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the afternoon. Viewing may also be by appointment. On display will be various types of art which will be selected by the owners in consultation with the artists. The basic concept of the venture is to allow people to see art works in a more natural setting, which can not be obtained in a gallery. A variety of art works in the setting of a home which has smaller, more intimate rooms, softer lighting and furnishings, helps make the art work more easily identified with by the viewing public. This report covers areas such as the rationale behind the venture as well as the various art forms that can be displayed. There is a section on the Town Planning requirements involved which is followed by how it is intended that the venture can be marketed. A section on insurance and the necessary requirements precedes details on what modifications are needed to be made to the house, after which the important aspect of finance - what costs are incurred and how revenue is to be derived. The last section deals with feedback from some of Christchurch's artists. The appendix at the rear includes plans of the house and which areas are open to the public, plus photos of these areas. Also included in the appendix is a map of the surrounding streets, showing available car parking. In the writer's opinion this is a very worthwhile venture with a great deal of potential and is extremely suitable for setting up in other areas of New Zealand.... [Show full abstract]
