This study traces the history and development of the ski patrolling system at Whakapapa ski field from its origins in the 1950s through to the present day. Attention is given to how events and decisions throughout the history of the patrol have significance in the present day structure of the patrol system. The history is described in chronological order from its origin 1952 to the present day. The development of the patrol system is also linked to the increase in ski field lift facilities, and the changes to visitor numbers.en
