Publishing research using an open access option provides online availability to the content for all readers without charge, whether they are subscribers or not. While open access publishing adds increased certainty and timeliness for the authors, it also ensures the content being made available is free of most copyright restrictions, enabling reuse or sharing of the resource. Typically it also establishes a persistent link for longevity, potentially in an environment that is designed for connecting to other digital services, whether they are established for creating a digital identity or professional profile, promoting open resources, or measuring citations and impact of the research. The open access model can be applied equally to research outputs and research data.en
