Abstract
In 150 years of Otago gold rush historiography, it has been persistantly argued that the earliest reports of gold finds in the decade from 1848 to 1858 were suppressed, hidden, or actively discredited by the local government leadership working with compliant newspaper editors. Recent publications have increased the intensity of this argument, yet examination of the newspaper reports from the time reveals an entirely different story.
