Re-assessing groundwater-surface water exchange in gravel-bed rivers

Abstract

The aim of this presentation is to re-assess the concepts of surface water-groundwater interaction in gravel-bed river settings. The simple concepts and definitions familiar to us have been inherited from studies conducted in relatively passive river environments oversees (e.g. Winter et al. 1998, Brunner et al. 2009). For gravel bed rivers, a re-assessment is required to understand how existing definitions apply to a river environment which has an appreciable riverbed reservoir.
