Abstract
In November 1955 Cabinet approved in principle the construction at Lincoln College of a library as a national memorial to the late Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes. The selected design in the subsequent architectural competition was that submitted by Mr I. B. Reynolds of the firm of Jones, Adams, Kingston and Reynolds, of Auckland. Government approval of the scheme was given in May 1957, and the memorial stone was laid on 5 November of the same year. Construction of the building was begun in May 1959, and it was first opened to readers on 13 June 1960, two months prior to the formal opening ceremony and dedication.
