Abstract
Research has been carried out on challenges faced by rural small business owners, and on women in the agricultural sector in rural areas. Other studies have found that festivals and other community events often have beneficial social outcomes, and can contribute to building and supporting the rural communities that host them. However, there is a significant gap in our understanding of the nexus of rural women, business owners, and business events. This study sheds light on this overlooked area of critical event studies, seeking to understand the importance of local business events for rural women in business. It finds that, like festivals and community events, business events held in small rural areas can also generate a significant social contribution. Connection with other rural women in business, with customers, and with their wider community was facilitated at the Women in Business Expo under investigation here. While the last two of these connections were part of the rationale behind the need for the event, all three were important for the stallholder attendees.
