Abstract
In 1938 Professor Henry Giese of Iowa State College undertook a project to study the possibilities of improving fence construction methods. Results of tests, mainly on various configurations of horizontal stay end structures, were published in 1940 and have remained the basis for recommendations on these strainer assemblies to this day. However, recent interest in alternative designs of end structures, including those used for supporting vines in horticulture, has prompted the Institute to take a closer look at these as well as at the more conventional assemblies. Institute and MAF staff at Hamilton have concentrated on end structures for horticulture. At Lincoln we have begun a study of fence end structures and this is what will be described in this paper.
