Abstract
Teaching English as a Second Language in cross-cultural classrooms may present some challenges (Olsen et al., 2024), especially when giving instructions to learners. This presentation is designed as professional development for teachers of ESL. It is informed by reflective classroom practice (both in Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas) and established research on cross-cultural communication in the ESL context. The presentation aims to highlight how cultural and linguistic diversity can influence classroom expectations, participation patterns, and interpretations of instruction. Following that, the talk offers adaptable, research-based strategies for cross-cultural communication which teachers can apply in their own classrooms. These strategies include designing clear and concise instructions, using multimodal supports and applying systematic techniques for checking understanding across cultures (e.g., paraphrasing, demonstration and non-verbal feedback cues). Through this presentation, participants will gain practical approaches for culturally responsive instruction, as well as strategies used to foster inclusive classroom environments where learners feel comfortable and safe seeking clarification
