Abstract
Entomology is rightly described as a highly specialised branch of zoological science. But this is the only sense in which it can be defined as a narrow field. For its sphere of application in agriculture alone indicates that it has a helpful contribution to make in the control of insects affecting man and animals, and this contribution cannot be ignored in matters of production. In addition, insects infest the end products of agriculture, whether these be seeds, food included for human or animal welfare, or timber products for use in agricultural and civilian construction. In addition to this, insects play the major role in the spread of some of the worst plant diseases, notably the viruses.
