Application of IoT-based systems in seismic monitoring of structures

Abstract

The use of wireless sensors for seismic monitoring has been very limited, mainly due to high cost and power supply limitations. Therefore, the majority of wireless seismic monitoring sensors developed to date have been for short duration applications such as laboratory tests or limited field measurements. In this study, an attempt has been made to investigate the application of an IoTbased system in Seismic monitoring. As a part of an ongoing research, a prototype is developed using an IOT-based transceiver plugged onto the development board and an embedded 3-d axis accelerometer. The developed device is programmed to transfer the acceleration measurements above a certain seismic threshold wirelessly through an IOT portal to a cloud server. Even though some limitations are observed in terms of data transfer rate, the preliminary results obtained to date show a great potential for such systems as an economical alternative to the existing seismic monitoring systems
