Abstract
As agricultural mechanization expands across Asia, attention is shifting from how farmers adopt machinery to the broader economic, social, environmental, and distributional impacts. While mechanization is often promoted as a way to address labor shortages, boost productivity, and help farmers cope with climate stress, its effects on income, nutrition, gender equity, labor markets, and sustainability vary widely across countries and communities.
This volume examines how mechanization affects farm productivity and household well-being. Across diverse Asian settings, the chapters show that mechanization can improve crop yields, labor productivity, household income, dietary diversity, and efficiency. However, the gains are not always shared evenly. Better-resourced farmers often benefit most unless machinery services are accessible and support is well targeted. Several chapters also highlight persistent gender gaps in women’s access to mechanization and digital tools, which can affect yields, wages, and labor participation.
The discussions underscore the need for inclusive, service-oriented, and climate-smart mechanization policies complemented by gender-sensitive interventions, access to finance, training, and digital infrastructure.
