Stack, D. J.2022-09-142022-09-141998https://hdl.handle.net/10182/15435Computers have become a necessary tool of agri-business and are recognised as an effective component of business structure. Sonka (1985) notes, with the continually changing needs of managers operating in an environment, that information plays an increasingly important role. Pig production success relies on accurate management and control to achieve the objectives set by the owner. Information systems that are designed to aid and improve management efficiency are called 'management information systems' (MIS). The most recent MIS computer package to be developed and released for the New Zealand pig industry is PigWIN®. Developed for commercial release in December 1997. The value of the information from a MIS in an on-farm situation must be assessed in terms of the extent to which it influences the decision-making of the manager, and the degree of utility that is gained by the manager. This research will evaluate the potential utility of its use relative to the managers' information needs, solely regarding the pig breeding. Identifying limitations and evaluating investment criteria necessary for a sound investment decision. The investment criteria that has been imposed demonstrates that, for a 180 sow unit, an increase in 0.24 pigs weaned/sow/year is required, if the investment is to be profitable.VII, 92 pagesenhttps://researcharchive.lincoln.ac.nz/pages/rightsagri-businessPigWIN®management information systemspig farmingfarm case studyInformation needs for efficient pig production - a case study of PigWIN® : A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Honours) at Lincoln UniversityDissertationDigital thesis can be viewed by current staff and students of Lincoln University only.
