Indeed, family groups make up a small proportion of visitors to wineries in most regions of the world. This is made clear with a quick overview of wine tourism promotion, where one finds very few images that promote wine experiences that include families and children. There are many reasons for this exclusion of families from wine tourism activities, including a general reluctance to view attractions serving or promoting alcohol in any form as an attractive or appropriate activity for children. There is a sense, also, that what is being showcased at wine tourism attractions is of little interest to children- whether that be the wine itself, or the relatively complicated scientific process of grape-growing and winemaking. However, it doesn't have to be this way. This chapter presents a case study the illustrates how Hameau Duboeuf, a pioneering wine tourism attraction in Beaujolais, France, is defying these perceptions. Called the "First Theme Park of Viticulture and Wine," Hameau Duboeuf provides a wine experience that appeals to both adults and children, enabling families to engage in a fun interactive family time together.pp.213-232, 16 chaptersenText Copyright (C) 2016 By Dr. Liz Thach, MW and Dr. Steve Charters, MW, Editorswine tourismfamiliesFranceWine and kids: Making wine tourism work for families in Beaujolais at Hameau Duboeuf WineryBook ChapterANZSRC::150606 Tourist Behaviour and Visitor Experience
