The literature on environmental lead and its implications is vast, complex and contradictory. It appears to be neither possible nor necessary to review the entire field in the context of a short brief. Instead, attention has been directed towards four topics that are of immediate relevance in New Zealand. These topics are: 1. Lead levels in humans and the urban environment in New Zealand and comparisons with overseas data; 2. Evidence for and against the existence of a range of subtle neuropsychological effects in children with blood lead levels below the threshold of clinical lead poisoning ('subclinical effects ') 3. Sources of environmental lead in New Zealand and pathways that lead to elevated blood lead levels; and, 4. Policy implications of the three sections outlined above.32 pages© Lincoln College & University of Canterburyblood analysisenvironmental lead levelsneuropsychological effectsEnvironmental and body lead levels in New Zealand: Issues and implicationsDiscussion PaperANZSRC::340199 Analytical chemistry not elsewhere classifiedANZSRC::520301 Clinical neuropsychology
