Abstract
The Orange Order, an Irish-founded fraternal society, spread throughout the British World from the nineteenth century. Its mixture of militant Reformation -style Protestantism and fierce loyalty to the British Crown drew like-minded members from a wide range of christian denominations and ethnic backgrounds. Countries like Australia and New Zealand relied heavily on new migrants to bolster membership, despite producing locally- born members.
