Abstract
The Franz Josef glacier has attracted thousands of people every year, and with it the problem of access has increased. What this dissertation has set out to achieve is; firstly, a means of organising recreational activities that can best provide a range of opportunities for people with consideration to the landscape. Secondly, to describe the problems that have been encountered in the Franz Josef valley with respect to the type of access that is provided for recreationists. It is by no means a way to solving the situation but only providing an understanding to the problems.
