Abstract
The case study property is a 202.5 hectare, light land farm presently being developed with irrigation. Of the 202.5 hectares, 192 hectares is effective, the balance being yards, tracks, and shelter belt lines. The farm is well served by most business and social services in Ashburton, 24 km away. Stock for slaughter are transported 76 km to the Kaiapoi Freezing Works. Lime comes from the Mt Somers quarry, but all other services are available in Ashburton. At present 60.7 hectares of crop is grown with the remainder of the farm supporting a Corriedale ewe flock producing prime lambs and ewe replacements for the flock. This study has been undertaken to determine if the development of the farm with irrigation is financially feasible and desirable. The study will consider the farm as it is now without irrigation, under the present management, and its production potential with irrigation in the long term. Alternative irrigation systems will be compared to establish the best system for the situation.
