Abstract
Annually some 1.5 million tons of fertiliser, at an on ground cost of $50 million is being applied to New Zealand farm lands. Two thirds of this fertiliser is sown by ground based fertiliser distributors. The performance of this type of machinery is ,then, of considerable importance to the farming industry. With the aim of providing both the farmer and manufacturer with information on the spreading characteristics of ground based distributors, the New Zealand Agricultural Engineering Institute (N.Z.A.E.I.) is currently conducting laboratory tests on this type of machinery. This project report discusses the importance of the even distribution of fertiliser and outlines the scheme of the N.Z.A.E.I. tests on broadcast type fertiliser distributors.
