Effects of a mid-winter defoliation on six grass species: A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Agricultural Science with Honours in the University of Canterbury

Abstract

Two mowing experiments were conducted in 1982 to study the effects of (a) a mid-winter cut on the yields and tiller numbers of six grass species with 'Grasslands Huia' white clover (Trifolium repens L.), and (b) cutting height in winter on the yields and tiller numbers of pure stands of 'Grasslands' Nui ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and 'Grasslands Matua' prairie grass (Bromus catharticus Vahl). Each trial had a split plot design and five replicates, with grass species being the main plot treatments. Plots were sown in April 1981 following a period of cropping. All mowing was to 2 cm height except for the 4 cm cutting height treatment in the grass-only trial.
