Market Forces have made changes to the social fabric of rural society. These can be seen most markedly in the changes in the demographic picture of low income rural populations and the changing economic profile of rural women. However under the present economic model investment in rural communities is seen only in terms of financial capital, whereas social capital is also a valid investment for rural communities. This paper will discuss the changes to rural communities and define social capital as a concept for rural investment. It will then explore the placement of social workers in rural communities to support investment in social capital, thereby assisting individual health needs and helping to improve the health status of rural communities.en
