Abstract
This dissertation presents a study of the Christchurch reserve of Mona Vale. Some 85 years after the property was first established as a private family home, it is now an important reserve in metropolitan Christchurch. The purchase of Mona Vale for the people of Christchurch was inspired by the historical and landscape qualities which are discussed in this study. These special attributes have contributed to the popularity of the reserve for passive forms of recreation. Planning for future management and development is raised in the final part of the dissertation. Rather than developing detailed solutions to problems, recommendations have been made on areas warranting further, in-depth consideration. Already, more specific areas have been investigated by others, such as a management report by Lincoln College student Diane Boyd, in 1984, which looked at turf, irrigation and planting. This and other work on Mona Vale may eventually be useful in the formulation of a management plan for the reserve.
