Abstract
The study is based on the Town and Country Planning Act 1953 and its amendments until 1977. The new "Town and Country Planning Act 1977", however, does make the work a bit complicated. The planning schemes and reviews of Auckland and Christchurch lapse in different times. The study therefore has to base on the general principles of the Act, and the study mainly based on the Auckland District Scheme 1970, Objectives 1976 (Auckland), District Scheme Review 1977. For Christchurch, the District Scheme 1972, City Plan Review 1977, Open Space and Recreation Report 1973, as well as many planning documents (e.g. landscape requirement, tree protection, subdivision requirement) are used. My summer holiday in 1975 in Auckland, and last year’s field trip on recreation facilities and resources on the Northern region, and the proximity from Lincoln to Christchurch certainly assisted me a lot in the physical appreciation of these two locations of study. The first section is based on the general aspect or town planning in New Zealand. The second section is on the discussion of Auckland and Christchurch planning schemes in relation to parks and recreation services. The final is a summary or the above discussed aspects of parks and recreation concerned in the planning process, and the conclusion or what can be done in a district scheme for the parks and recreation purpose or a territorial local authority. The last, but not the least, are recommendations and some general guidelines and planning relationships of parks and recreation.
