Abstract
In urban areas , not enough consideration has been given by local authorities to choosing the most appropriate tree to fit within the constraints imposed upon it by the planting site. In this dissertation I wish to show that there are appropriate species available with amenity qualities for urban street improvement. To achieve this I have divided the dissertation into two sections. In the first section I have outlined factors to be considered before tree planting is undertaken. The second section is a selected list of 26 genera suitable for streets under different considerations in New Zealand and temperate Australia. A tabulated summary of features will be shown as an appendix so that the suitability of different trees to a particular site may be seen at a glance.
