Design and research roundtable

Abstract

The prompt for this roundtable discussion came from the opportunity to collaborate in a design research studio with Lincoln University hosting Wageningen University. The discussion at the roundtable session at the ECLAS conference in Greenwich in September 2017 revealed a growing interest in the relevance, role, and form design and designing can play in landscape architecture research programmes around the world. We identified a range of approaches related to design’s role in academic scholarship. The dialogue then unfolded to examine respective understandings of ‘research through design’ and ‘design-directed research’
