The basic aim of this dissertation is to examine the role of voluntary organisations within New Zealand's parks and reserves system. At a time when changes within national parks and reserves administration is imminent, it would be an excellent opportunity to discuss the role of volunteer organisations. Information from overseas and within New Zealand has been collated and this should indicate a direction for volunteers in parks. Up till the present the honorary ranger system, especially, has lacked any direction because of a lack of firm policy. A survey of randomly selected honorary rangers has been used to elicit information on how this group see their role. The information gathered will be used to form suggestions and recommendations concerning volunteers in parks.en
