A major aim of the National Parks Act (1952) is to provide interpretation in National Parks. The aim of interpretation is to assist visitors in gaining the greatest possible benefit and enjoyment from their stay in the park. It also provides the opportunity for visitors to gain an understanding of the park's objectives and the park's natural, historic and cultural significance. In 1982 the South Okarito area was added to Westland National Park. This study examines the information required for interpretation at Okarito and the opportunities for interpretation in the Okarito area. The Okarito area is defined as including the lagoon, Okarito township, the South Okarito Park addition and the adjacent sea coast. A resource data base has been presented for the Okarito area. Such information will be useful to individuals or organizations interested in the area. More importantly, the information will be useful for those who have to manage and interpret the area in the future.en
