Nowadays leisure, and consequently recreation, is an accepted and important part of life. Recreation itself is fostered and encouraged because it is regarded as having several attributes conducive to the development of a well balanced community. It is important that recreation be recognised as being worthwhile for its intrinsic value, simply for the fun and sheer enjoyment it can provide. Because Hamilton is an inland city and a long way from the coast, by New Zealand standards, the need for a facility like Te Rapa was greater than in any coastal city. Te Rapa provides an ideal alternative to a day at the beach. The large outdoor Lido Pool, which is heated, and the extensive area of open space surrounding it makes it an excellent facility.en
