This study was undertaken to expand and enhance the extremely limited body of knowledge on media content related to sport in New Zealand. The study was designed to provide comprehensive empiric data on newspaper coverage of competitive sport. The limited resources of the researcher required the selection of a readily accessible sample. The Press, a Christchurch daily newspaper was selected because it was convenient and familiar to the researcher. The content analysis research technique was adopted because of its characteristics of objectivity and systematic collection of data. The survey undertaken was greatly assisted by the use of computer colation and analysis of data.en
