Abstract
Community resettlement as a consequence of the effects of climate change is a problematic issue for local authorities. The Upper Selwyn Huts is a community at risk from higher lake levels due to sea-level rise and potential increases in the magnitude of flood events from the Selwyn River. Adopting an exploratory research approach, this research documents the planning and policy genealogy of the current situation concerning climate change impacts on the Upper Selwyn Huts. The Selwyn District Council's response to these is examined to identify whether a clear strategy is being followed in the engagement process between the Council and the community of the Upper Selwyn Huts. Also, to identify whether the potential need for community resettlement as part of the consequences of the engagement process has been considered by the Selwyn District Council. The findings highlight the need for empathy and long-term consistency in working with geographically vulnerable communities.
